How a Fitness Regimen Can Elevate Your Pageant Journey

Pageants demand a level of physical fitness that goes hand-in-hand with confidence and stage presence. From building stamina to projecting strength, a dedicated fitness plan is more than a supplement—it’s a prerequisite for standing out on the stage.

Workouts can be viewed as a holistic commitment to physical well-being. A robust fitness routine isn’t merely a preparation strategy; it’s a transformative journey.

Balanced workouts are crucial for promoting symmetry and preventing imbalances.

This approach enhances strength, flexibility, and endurance, fostering a well-rounded and sustainable fitness routine.

Try to incorporate a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises as you prepare for your event.

Example: Cardio sessions (running, cycling, or dance) 3-4 times per week, strength training 2-3 times per week, and yoga or stretching to maintain flexibility and allow time for recovery.

Targeted Exercises:

Focus on specific areas and muscle groups that are relevant to pageantry. Here you want to think about moves that work on core strength, support a strong posture, and enhance overall muscle tone.

Think about engaging your core throughout your workout. This helps to stabilize the spine and support an upright posture.

Here are other some muscle groups to zero in on and help with your posture and stage presence.

Back Muscles: These help move your body, including your head, neck, and shoulders.

We could all use a reminder to sit and stand up straight, and focusing on your back muscles will help reinforce good posture.

Shoulder Muscles: Stretching and strengthening the muscles of the shoulder, as well as those of the chest is super important. This can correct rounded shoulders, promote an open chest and prevent slouching. And it helps combat ‘tech neck’ or our poor posture from being on our phones all the time.

Glutes: Strong glutes contribute to a stable pelvis, and maintain proper posture by supporting the spine’s natural curvature.

If your pageant plans include wearing high heels, well-developed glutes can help alleviate strain on the lower back and contribute to better posture. This adds additional support for the spine and promotes a more comfortable and aligned stance, even in the highest of heels.

Cardiovascular Fitness & Endurance:

A demanding schedule is a guaranteed part of pageant competition. It is a week jam-packed, with rehearsals, interviews, appearances, and other events.

This requires contestants to sustain high energy levels for long periods of time. Focusing on cardiovascular endurance will ensure you’ve got the stamina to go the distance.

From a science perspective, improving your cardiovascular fitness will ensure efficient oxygen delivery to muscles, reducing fatigue and boosting endurance.

Focusing on cardiovascular health contributes to a confident and vibrant stage presence. Plus, it also aids in managing the physical and mental demands of a rigorous pageant week schedule.

Example: Incorporate high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in your workouts to improve cardiovascular fitness.

Consistency is Key:

Establish a consistent workout routine well in advance of your pageant. Make working out part of your self care strategy.

Try to workout at the same time each day. This helps with building a routine and creating a healthy habit.

One of my favorite fitness hacks: If you can make your workout fun, or something you look forward to, that’s the best tip!

For example, I recently bought a mini trampoline. So even on days when I don’t feel like working out, I tell myself to go jump for 5 minutes. Without fail, it puts me in a better mood and I’m ready for a longer workout afterwards. Give it a try!

Professional Fitness Guidance:

Consider working with a personal trainer to create a customized workout plan.

Example: Consult with a fitness professional to design a program tailored to your goals and timeline. And a personal trainer is great for accountability to ensure you actually make it to the gym for your sessions.
